A four storey 1970's Category II
sheltered housing complex
consisting of a mix of
one-bedroomed flats and bedsits.
The Association identified the need
for reinvestment in their stock so
that older people could remain
longer in their own homes and
the quality of the accommodation
would compete with that provided
in newer buildings
A feasibility study was prepared
showing how the building could
be remodelled to eliminate the
bed-sitting rooms and replace them
with one or two bedroomed flats
The first phase was implemented,
consisting of the conversion of
bedsitting rooms into
one-bedroomed flats

|
Planning also included remodelling
of the common areas, which would
allow the use of the building facilities
for outreach to support older people
in the local community.
The individual entrances off the
corridor were designed to create
a more identifiable and domestic
entrance to the flats.
Internally, careful use was made
of colour and visibility of different
elements within the flat to make
the environment as easy to use
and understand as possible. Whilst
not specifically designed for
wheelchair users, flats were
planned so that there was access
and space for wheelchair turning in
all rooms.
