Burchell Court
Lancing, Sussex
Newbuild and remodelled
housing for older people
for Housing 21
Burchell Court was a 1960's sheltered
housing scheme in Lancing. It comprised
a mixture of bedsits and one bedroom
flats in a 'U'shaped one and two storey
building with a landscaped courtyard.
There were problems in letting bedsits
and a need to bring the scheme up to
date.
Following a presentation to the tenants,
the final proposal included the demolition
of the single storey part of the scheme
and the construction of 10 new self
contained flats. In addition, a number
of the most popular bedsits were either
refurbished or remodelled into flats.
An unusual feature is the design and
integration of a mosaic into the
floor at the main entrance.

A new lift shaft was constructed and
the manager's accommodation was
relocated to provide a private garden.
Two offices were created adjacent to
the front entrance, and space provided
for a future kitchen to serve communal
meals. The scheme also provided
assisted bathing and hairdressing
facilities.
Additional work included replacement
of windows, re-roofing and the
application of an external insulated
render system to upgrade the thermal
performance.
The work was phased to allow tenants
to remain in occupation.
