Elizabeth Court

Sunbury, Middlesex

Newbuild sheltered housing for the Apex Group. Won 2003 Spelthorne Design Award Commendation

The previous building had provided
predominantly bedsit accommodation
in linked single and two storey
buildings around a central courtyard.

The site had been fully developed
leaving very little scope for extension.

After investigating options for both
remodelling and reconstruction, the
latter was chosen in view of the
inflexible nature of the previous
structure and to take advantage of
the VAT saving on new buildings.

Whilst respecting the previous
footprint, by creatively designing
a new pitched roof and placing
flats within it, the size of the
accommodation was increased

By means of this approach there
was no loss of number of units
while the new building (on the
existing foundation), provided
wide frontage flats to current
standards.
