Meachen Court

Palmer School Road, Wokingham

Sheltered housing for older people for Wokingham District Council

Meachen Court provides
sheltered accommodation
Category 2) for fifty older
people on a superb site close
to the centre of Wokingham

The aim was to provide
self-contained one bedroom
flats in a non-institutional
atmosphere which would
allow the inhabitants
to meet the challenge of
living independently.

The flats themselves are
designed to make life easier for the older person with easy to use ironmongery, wide doors, level thresholds, lever taps and so on.

Communal areas adjoin
and overlook the main
entrance, which encourages their use.

The building is two storey,
well articulated and planned
to retain existing trees so
that it fits its context. Internally, the services are
routed so as to avoid the need for demountable ceilings in corridors. Flat entrances are set back from the corridors
to give identity to the spaces and create a more homely feel.

(This project was undertaken by Patrick Manwell while associate in a South London practice.)
