United Reform Church

Kingston upon Thames

Improved access and new entrance and lift tower

The United Reformed Church in
Kingston is a nineteenth century
landmark building. It was extended in
the 1970's to provide a wide range of
rooms which have been intensively
used by the community since then.

Archadia were commissioned to
develop a design for a new entrance
and lift tower. The brief was to give
the community facilities a greater
street presence as well as to provide
access to the upper floor for all,
including wheelchair users.

The entire building complex is Grade II
listed and a sensitive approach was
required to ensure that the new
additions blended sympathetically
into the original building.

In addition the Church wished to
rearrange and increase the space
in the foyer and meeting rooms.

Archadia's proposals creatively
manipulated the existing ground
floor area to allow a larger foyer
to be created with corner sliding
doors opening onto new meeting
rooms.

At first floor level a new
conference/seminar room with the
latest audio visual facilities allows
the church to attract organisations
to make good use of this valuable
building resource.
